Aloe vera is known to soothe sunburns, but it can also be eaten or drunk. Some claim it can relieve heartburn and constipation. Although clinical evidence to support these claims is scarce, aloe vera is a common food source in many cultures, including Asia and Latin America.
Look for leaves that are bright green, thick, fleshy and dense. This indicates a high water content. Also check for visible signs of damage.
Although most people apply aloe vera gel to their skin to relieve a burn, it can also be consumed if properly prepared.
Whole aloe vera leaves will stay fresh for one or two days at room temperature, but will keep for up to a week in the refrigerator and eight months if frozen.
