Mamey is a tropical fruit native to Central and South America. It is oval in shape and has a rough exterior that is brownish red in color. The flesh of the fruit is salmon-colored and has a sweet, creamy flavor similar to pumpkin or sweet potato.

Purchase guide

Look for fruit that is firm to the touch, but yields slightly when pressed. It should also have slightly wrinkled skin and a strong, sweet aroma.

Consumption

Mamey fruit can be eaten raw, blended into smoothies or used in desserts.

The mamey can stay at room temperature until it is ripe. Then, it can be stored in the refrigerator, wrapped in paper towel, for up to a week.
