Young coconuts are harvested directly from the tree before they have time to age and fall off the tree. They are cut into pieces to give them a round/conical shape which facilitates their packaging and shipping.
Although it is normal to see some spots, look for a young coconut that is as white as possible. The underside should be free of cracks and should not be too soft.
To enjoy the water from the young coconut, open the top with a knife. Set it aside on the counter and make an incision on the conical part. Strain the water through a sieve to remove the small pieces of the peel.
Depending on their freshness at the time of purchase, young coconuts can be stored at room temperature for up to 4 months.
